Can You Handle Greatness?

I was attending church on Wednesday and the guest minister spoke on the topic-Can you handle greatness? And his topic was based on the scripture from Gen Ch. 12:1-3 – The Lord said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”

This message really touched my soul. Often times we are afraid of  achieving greatness. We are afraid to take a risk and step out on faith. Many of us are satisfied with just being good, but what about being great? Don’t get me wrong achieving greatness is not easy…because if it was everyone would be great.

Most times it causes us to feel uncomfortable.  However, being uncomfortable may be what you need to do in order to take that leap of faith. In the scripture the Lord told Abram what to do and promised him that if he did what He said, then Abram would be great. How many times has God spoken to you about leaving that job, that relationship, that city or perhaps telling you to write that book (talking about me), or starting that business? And how many times have you disobeyed him? You perhaps chose not to listen to what God has put on your spirit for fear of the unknown. But don’t you realize that God will not fail you? If he brings you out of that job, that relationship, that town or tells you to write that book or start that business… he is setting you up for your destiny…your greatness. He is preparing to “blow your natural mind!” And I know you are saying, “Kim, I have free will I can make my own decisions.” You are correct. God gives us free will. So perhaps you choose to go down a different path – not the one that God has for you. But if you continue to believe and have faith…..God will lead you back on the path that he has for you.  However, I believe that God will only give you so many chances to receive the awesome blessings that he has for you before he says, “Ok…apparently you are not willing to listen to me-so I’m going to have to delay what I have in store for you.”

So be careful when you block out what God is telling you – because that blessing may not come your way again- at least not for a long time. You have to have faith and if you want greatness for yourself then you have to believe that it will happen, but only if you listen.  I remember when I worked at the insurance company after much turmoil and strife there- I asked God what to do. He then told me to resign instantly. I couldn’t believe he told me to do that…but even though it was uncomfortable and I was scared…I resigned quick, fast and a hurry. It wasn’t until I left the building and got in my car when I said to myself, “Oh my God. What did I just do? I have a mortgage, a car note etc… and I don’t have another job to fall back on.”  But then a sense of calm rushed over my spirit and I knew that I did the right thing, and I trusted God and knew that he was setting me up for something greater. And he did…2 months later I got a manager position at a great company and I loved it.  On the flip side of not listening to him…I was working at the church part time and I kept pressing them to hire me on a full time basis (this is while the economy was good) and I was so sure that I was going to have a full time position at the church. When my spirit kept tugging at me -saying don’t push it…stop asking to be hired full time.  What did I do? I ignored it. I did get hired full time-for like a month. And then I got laid off and by that time the economy was bad and I was out of work for 8 months. Imagine had I listened to God-I would have looked for other opportunities while I was working part time- and then I would have had the upper hand when it came to my position at the church because I may have had another job offer which I could have used as a bargaining chip.

I say all this to say- don’t be afraid of greatness-you can handle it. If you have haters out there- you know it’s because they recognize the greatness in you and they can’t handle it. But it’s not enough for haters to recognize your greatness…you have to recognize the greatness in yourself. Believe me you have “it” and you are GREAT!!!
