So last Friday I had the awesome pleasure of attending the Women of Excellence Conference in Indianapolis.  Well, I don’t know how much attending I got to do – but I did have a booth at the event to sell my book. Having a booth at events is always very interesting.  I met a lot of different people. And I heard a lot of excuses- excuses as to why they couldn’t or “wouldn’t” purchase my book and excuses as to why they wouldn’t start writing that book that they have been wanting to write for years.  First, I want to tell you the excuses that I heard for not purchasing my book:

Excuse 1. “I lost my job 2 months ago – where was your book then when I needed it?

Excuse 2. “I’m retired- I already know everything.”

Excuse 3. “I’m not laid out yet- I still have my job and I’m still standing.”

Excuse 4. “$15.00 whew- that’s a lot.”

Excuse 5. “Well…I don’t have a job now but I just bought this jewelry.”

Excuse 6.  ” Nice tittle, but I don’t need this.”

Excuse 7. “I promise I will be back and I will buy the book then.”

All of these excuses cracked me up inside.   My book is not just for those who are laid off. I have had all kinds of people who have read my book. Those who have been laid off, those who haven’t, retired people, younger people etc…there are life lessons for everyone in my book.  And some folks think that they will magically lose their job if they purchase my book. Wow! I didn’t realize that I had that much power.  But seriously, just say you don’t want to buy my book instead of giving me a gang of useless excuses. Just “Do it” be real and say, “No thanks.”

Now, on to the biggest excuse of the night.  A woman stopped by my booth and looked through my book and decided that she had some burning questions to ask me about the book writing/publishing process. I talked to her for about 20 minutes. She then began to tell me that she wanted to write a book about her  life’s journey. And this book has been in her spirit for several years. I then asked her one burning question, “WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?” She said she didn’t know. I said, “If you aspire to be a Woman of Excellence – then you are not being excellent to yourself by not doing what you need to do to write your book.”   She said, ” I know but I just don’t know how to go about this.” I told her three simple words- “JUST DO IT!!!”  I explained to her that the book was not going to write itself.  I told her that she needs to take an hour out of her day and write. She needs to leave her house and go some place and write-get her words down on paper. She said that I was right and she thanked me for my advice.

Ladies and gentlemen, the moral of the story is “JUST DO IT!” whatever it is that you want to do – you have to put effort into what you want,  because it will not happen on its own.  Nike sure did know what they were doing when they came up with that saying – JUST DO IT!
